Welcome
“The Church loves the Psalms because in them she sings of her experience of God, of her union with the Incarnate Word, of her contemplation of God in the Mystery of Christ.” (Thomas Merton, Praying the Psalms)
Dear Friend,
For many years the psalms have been the bedrock of my spiritual life. My prayer has been shaped around the rhythms of the Daily Office, an ancient form of liturgical prayer which is essentially the praying of the psalter followed by meditation on Scripture. Over time I’ve noticed that others, even those from non-liturgical traditions, have found this regular singing and praying of the psalms to be helpful. So, since the beginning of 2009, I have been looking for opportunities to share this prayer with others.
I invite you to join me in praying the psalms. There are various ways you might choose to do this:
- If you live in Castle Rock or Denver, CO, or know you are near me when I’m traveling elsewhere, you might want to meet me so we can pray together. Find out more here.
- You might want to pray the psalms at the same time. Find out more here.
- You could simply share in the experience of praying the psalms. If you have a Bible, you’ll find the psalms in the middle. Otherwise, you can read the psalms online here (Episcopal Church version) and here (Orthodox version from the monastery of New Skete) and here (various older versions for singing). Or, you can download the psalter from the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer in PDF format here (the file is copyright free). Or, you can pray online at the Universalis website here.
- You may want to read my reflections on praying the psalms here.
Whichever you choose, I hope the resources and meditations on this site will help refresh and renew your own life of prayer.
Every blessing,
Christopher Webb
